BRIEF HISTORY OF MUGOIRI GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL
SCHOOL MOTTO “YOU ARE THE LIGHT”
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The school was started in 1938 as a primary, then as intermediate between 1940-1956 by Consolata Catholic sisters. The school population started with a handful of 25 students and manpower of 4 teachers headed by Sr. Zaveria Pasqualini. By the end of 1956, population had risen to a total of 150 students. Most of the students who passed well in K.A.P.E. joined Teachers training colleges and qualified as T3 and T4.

Within this period of time, the school’s name was “GATIIGURU” which denoted a hill. The physical facilities when the institution began were made up of sisal timer, However in the late 40s, stone walled structures were put up, with the help of the Nyeri Catholic Diocese, and the assistance of the government.
STAFFING
Currently the school has 27 teachers, from T.S.C.
The B.O.G. has also employed a work force of 22 non-teaching staff
ACHIEVEMENTS
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
- Drama: Year 2009, students have participated and competed well in this area. Trophies and certificates have been awarded at District, Provincial and National level.
- Games: Students have also competed well upto Provincial levels.

Athletics: The girls have not been left behind in this area. In year 2009 they competed well up to Provincial levels.
- Music competition: This year (2009) students competed up to National level.
THE SCHOOL EXPANSION
In 1965 the school expanded to double streams, more staff houses were put and Sr. Teresa Elisa headed the school.
Africanization of the school in 1971 saw Miss Chritine Nakhanu as the H/M, and she initiated the opening up of the 1st ‘A’ level stream the following year through the initiative of Mrs. Hellen Mugo who headed the school for 15 years.
With the phasing out of the old system, and introduction of new 8-4-4, the school retained 3 streams ‘O’ level classes, with a current population of 664 students.
There is room for improvement, and the struggle to institute new academic strategies continue to be implemented. No-one is giving up in putting more effort. In 1997 K.C.S.E. Results, the school was position 65 in category of 100 candidates and above.

In 1998 despite the hardships experienced due to the teacher’s strike countrywide, the school maintained M.S.S of C+ and was position 78 among schools with over 100 candidates 1999 K.C.S.E position 44 among Provincial schools in the country, and No. 7 in the Province, while we topped as No. 1 in the District.
In year 2001 the school registered a drop, held position 78, with a mean of 7.1587 grade C+, 2002 position 100 and 2003 position 101 in the country. In 2004, we reclaimed our position 50 in the country among Provincials in the country a mean of 8.1654 grade B-, 20005 position 66 and registered a M.S.S of 7.9315, 2006 a M.S.S of 7.6268 C+, 2007 A M.S.S of 7.38 C+ and 2008 a M.S.S of 7.01 C+.
